On the flip side, the '07's narrow, peaky powerband made it slightly difficult for mere mortal riders to keep the tach pegged near the red where the real power is. It takes a lot to faze this big machine. If we've got to pick one, though, it's the ZZ-R1200. The growling intake sentiment is right.

The Yamaha R6 has always been a machine of few compromises, and that's why we've always loved it. But the Kawasaki is a big surprise once you get it on what you would expect to be the Honda's turf. It's not fun to have things go wrong on a motorcycle , but if you spend a minute before you go off on a ride, you can increase the chances that nothing will. Compared to the Honda, the new ZZ-R seems unrefined and a bit industrial at first glance--not surprising, as it's built by a corporation that also builds bridges and commercial gas turbines. The dash of the Honda is well-designed and informative, but also a bit cluttered and distracting. If you're mad, sad, exhausted or anxious, stay put. All alone at a light that won't turn green? To start off, pull in the clutch, shift into first gear, roll on the throttle a little, and ease out the clutch. Learning to lean is an essential part of riding a motorcycle .

Visually it's difficult to distinguish the new R6 from the old. Sure, they go hellaciously fast: Unsanctioned blasts on overhead carpool lanes and across the desert confirmed something that we all know to be true (*cough* 175 indicated, cough cough!).

At speed these changes amount to a totally different riding experience than the previous version. So what happens when it comes time for the straightline fun to end and make that inevitable bend in the road? It's a big machine that can be used for just about any sort of task. Watch for potentially troublesome debris on both sides of the road. Shifting in a curve is not good practice, and something to be avoided. Did you accidently hit the cut-off switch? The wide seat spreads out your weight evenly, and makes even butts with not much padding feel perfectly comfy. A lot of nasty surprises end up on the sides of the road: empty McDonald's bags, nails, TV antennas, ladders, you name it. Careful whipping around that Camry going 7 mph in a 25-mph zone or you could end up with your head in the driver's side door when he turns into the driveway right in front of you. Always signal your intentions. You can brake (with both brakes) while leaned over, but you must do it gradually and with less force than if the bike is standing up straight. Poorly fitted ones can lessen your ability to brake and shift.
